Does it feel like the script has flipped?
Instead of your parents worrying about you, you’re the one worrying about them. Siblings may be hands-off or missing in action, and the weight falls on you. You’re double-checking their bills, wondering what would happen if they fell when no one was around — or worse, if they hurt someone while driving. Deep down, you want to honor their wish to stay at home, but you also worry about their safety and independence.
I get it — it’s a lot, and sometimes it feels like too much. Hi, I’m Trina: daughter, advocate, and Elderly Planning Coach. Navigating Elderly Parents is ranked in the top 5% of podcasts globally, and I believe that reflects how many daughters are quietly carrying the weight of helping aging parents stay safe, independent, and supported at home. I know what it’s like to juggle your own busy life while managing your parents’ needs, and that’s why this podcast exists — to help you find what works, save time, and feel supported along the way. My goal: give you the systems, planning tools, and trustworthy resources — boiled down to the nuggets that matter — so you can skip the endless searching, protect your parents’ independence, and finally breathe easier.
My experience helping my parents, in-laws and clients — along with countless friends navigating the same challenges — taught me how complicated aging can become. Even with good planning, things slip through the cracks: finances, safety, and those everyday changes that come with aging. Through it all, I’ve learned that no two families walk the same road, but we can all lean on shared wisdom, encouragement, and faith to guide us through.
I don’t offer medical, legal, or financial advice, and I’m not a licensed professional — but I am someone who knows how to ask the right questions, find trustworthy help, and share what’s been learned along the way.
I spent many late nights online trying to find those answers myself — only to end up more stressed and sleepless. What I discovered is that peace doesn’t come from knowing everything; it comes from finding the right next step and trusting the process. Experts, seniors, and caregivers have shared incredible wisdom with me, and I’ve made it my mission to pass those takeaways along to you.
Here, you’ll find practical tools, expert interviews, and gentle encouragement to help you:
-
Keep your parents safe, independent, and supported in their home
-
Navigate finances, healthcare, and planning decisions with clearer steps and understanding
-
Build systems that bring order instead of chaos
-
Honor your parents as God calls us to — with wisdom, grace, and love
This podcast is your space to get better equipped — with insights, resources, and strategies you can use today. Think of it like coffee with a friend who gets it.
Welcome to Navigating Elderly Parents.

Your parent just moved into assisted living. You exhaled. And then you realized nobody told you what happens next. Who manages the medications? What are those bed rails actually for? What does a blood clot look like in an elderly person and when do you call 911? The move is just the beginning of a different kind of watching.
In part two, Cassandra Plaisir, a registered nurse and ALF consultant with 18 years in long-term care and regulatory compliance, walks us through what daughters need to know after move-in day. She covers how medication management actually works inside a facility and why you still need to know every single pill, what bed rails can and cannot do and why sneaking one in could do more harm than good, how to recognize the early signs of a pressure wound, and what Florida's new Emily's Law means for blood clot awareness. She also talks through the 1823 assessment, how to handle a hesitant parent, what a respite stay is and why it almost always turns into a permanent move, and what the adjustment period really looks like from the inside.
This is not the episode you skip. Whether your parent just moved in or you are still planning, Cassandra gives you the kind of information that makes you a smarter, calmer advocate for your parent at every step.

If you're staring down the decision to move your mom or dad into senior living, nobody warns you about the stuff that actually matters. Nobody tells you what bedrails are for, who handles diabetic management and insulin, or what happens if your parent needs colostomy care, catheter care, or help with basic ADLs like bathing, dressing, and grooming. You just know you're scared, you feel guilty, and you don't know what questions to even ask.
That's why I sat down with Cassandra Plaisir, a registered nurse and ALF consultant with 18 years in long-term care, home health, and regulatory compliance. In this episode, Cassandra breaks down the real differences between standard assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, limited nursing services, limited mental health facilities, and extended congregate care for aging in place. She explains why a brittle diabetic on a sliding insulin scale may need a nurse on staff, why being bed bound or wheelchair bound changes admission eligibility, and the exact questions to ask so you walk in as a smart consumer instead of an easy sell. This isn't theory. This is the inside scoop from someone who has done the assessments herself.
You are not a bad daughter for needing help, and you are not betraying your parent by admitting you can't do it alone. Take a deep breath. You don't have to fix everything today, and you don't have to figure this out by yourself. Next time, Cassandra is back to cover what happens after the move, medication management, bedrails, wound care, and the blood clot signs every family needs to know. Stay with us for part two.

Your 90 year old mom looks at you and says it plainly. "I'm tired and I'm ready to check out." What do you even say back? Most families never get this far. They avoid the conversation altogether, or they only have it in the middle of a crisis, guessing at what their parent really wants because nobody asked while there was still time.
That's exactly the gap today's guests spend their careers closing. Dr. Gary Lee, a hospice and palliative care physician, and Pastor Larry Wildemuth, a hospital chaplain of 29 years, both with the Coda Alliance join me to talk about the Go Wish Cards a simple deck of 36 cards that turns one of life's hardest conversations into something families can actually sit down and do together. We get into how the cards were created, how to introduce them to a parent without it feeling heavy, and the other planning tools worth having on your radar.
It's a conversation, not a to-do list. Start with one card, one question, one honest moment with your parent — that's enough to begin. Want to try the online version for yourself? https://codaalliance.org/go-wish-game/
👉Overwhelmed by the fear of what's next with your parent. Let's talk it through. My Parent Planning Call is a 60-minute 1:1 conversation to help you get clarity and real next steps, no judgment, no cookie-cutter advice.

"I'm feeling a bit more empowered now." That's what my client told me after our coaching call. Her mom lives alone in France while she is in Canada. Like a lot of daughters watching a parent age from far away, she came into the call thinking distance meant she couldn't really help.
This episode is that actual coaching call. We work through what questions to ask a parent who insists she's fine, what you can realistically do from thousands of miles away, and how to bring up money with siblings without becoming the "bad guy" of the family. You'll hear the exact framework I walk Jihane through, the same one I use with every long-distance daughter who feels helpless and guilty at the same time.
If you've ever hung up the phone still wondering how your parent is really doing, this one's for you. You are not the only daughter carrying this from a distance, and you don't have to figure it out alone.

Is your parent's TV always too loud? Do they say "what?" more than they used to? Hearing loss in elderly parents is one of those things everyone notices and nobody wants to talk about, until it can't be ignored anymore. In this episode I get personal about my own two ear surgeries and what it finally took to get my own mom tested.
So what's the real difference between an amplifier and a hearing aid, and which one should you actually start with? I break down the options, the costs, and the one simple move that can get even the most resistant parent to finally agree to see a doctor.
Hearing loss doesn't just stay quiet, it can speed up cognitive decline if it's left untreated. If you've been wondering how to get your parent to even try a hearing aid, this episode gives you the encouragement and the game plan to keep going. You're not doing this alone.

My mom just had surgery and started noticing something wasn't healing right. When she called the office, the front desk told her there were no appointments for six weeks, until September, and only the surgeon who did the procedure could see her. She's eighty two. She was worried, she was doing everything right, and the system still told her no.
So we pushed back. I explained exactly what we did, from getting the photo the office had requested (something she couldn't do herself, since it was a spot on her own shoulder blade she couldn't reach or see) to what happened when the callback silence started again just days later. This episode walks through the whole thing in real time, because if you're the one watching your parent heal and hitting a wall with their doctor's office, you need to know it's not just you, and you don't have to accept "no" as the final answer.
If there's one thing I want you to take from this, it's that advocating for your parent, or teaching them to advocate for themselves, isn't optional after a certain age. It's part of loving them well. You don't need a medical degree to push a door open. You just need to keep pushing.

That letter from the DMV lands in the mailbox and your stomach drops. Your elderly parent's license needs a vision recheck before it renews, and your mind jumps straight to the worst case: is this the end of driving for them, and the start of a much harder conversation?
But is it actually the end? There's one word in that letter that changes the whole story, and most families never stop to ask what it really means before the panic sets in. In this episode I unpack it, along with what actually happens next with senior driving and why the outcome is rarely what you're bracing for.
You were not made to carry this fear alone, and neither was your elderly parent made to lose their dignity over a form. Listen in before you make a single phone call.

If your parents are getting older, you've probably had that quiet, nagging thought: how are they going to pay for everything they need? Between food, medical costs, and the day-to-day of just living safely, it's easy to feel like you're supposed to have all the answers, especially when you're the daughter everyone looks to.
Here's the good news. There's a free, government-backed tool called BenefitsCheckup.org, from the National Council on Aging, that does a huge chunk of that research for you. Type in your parent's zip code and in minutes you'll see everything from food programs and housing help to transportation, PACE (a full all-inclusive care option), tax help, and veterans benefits, sometimes over a hundred results in one search.
You don't have to carry this alone, and you don't have to have it all figured out today. A few quiet minutes with this tool, even squeezed into a lunch break or a waiting room, can bring real peace to a season that feels heavy. Take the small step. Peace tends to follow it.
